Reignite the Winter City
Based on the integration of five cohesive features that cater to different age groups and are made entirely of reusable and repurposed materials, Reignite the Winter City was an ambitious effort to make full use of a public space. Recognizing that people are the most interesting aspect of public space; every Reignite the Winter City feature promoted interaction among people and their urban surroundings. Public space challenges during winter were reimagined as opportunities to celebrate the season. Light pierces darkness in Brick, Mortar & Light; fire contrasts ice and brings people together at Fire on the Rink and variable weather on both sides of freezing sets the stage for dramatic transformations for the Dynamic Snow Slides.
Using only materials from the nearby Carlsberg City redevelopment and the closing Louisiana Arctic and Experimentarium Dinosaurs exhibitions, the proposal was committed to using environmental and economic resources sparingly. Valet bike parking on the football court made bicycles an easy option, while street food vendors selected together with Copenhagen Street Food offered many food options while working to engage a diverse cross-section of Copenhagen residents. With a people-centred, down-to-earth philosophy, Reignite the Winter City proposed a vibrant, sustainable and attractive place for people.
